History
In September 1985 Mark Maryanovsky, future proprietor of ToneStudio, moved to Indianapolis, IN from New York City to become a member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. A native Russian, he was born in Latvia, graduated from Moscow Conservatory and came to the United States in1979. As a musician, music lover and long time audiophile, he was surprised to learn that Indianapolis had few places for audiophiles to shop and that many great sounding components had never been available here.
While studying the cello at the Julliard School of Music in 1981-82, Mark first met two of his good friends, David Chesky (from the Chesky Records) and late Ben Holt (opera singer and a reviewer for The Absolute Sound, a high-end audio magazine). On the advice of Mr. Holt, he decided to open his own small audio “boutique” and to name it “ToneStudio” to demonstrate that sound quality (tone) is the most important aspect of what the store was about.
Soon after, he found a small place (1,000 sq. ft.) in the Broad Ripple section of Indianapolis. This property needed reconstruction, demolition, new walls, painting, etc. With a limited budget, Mark had to learn how to do many things on his own. Finally ToneStudio opened for business in the fall of 1987.
Since Mark had no prior experience in sales, the store was given no more than six months to survive (it was generally believed that a store offering good sound only couldn't make it). Well, the store remained open at that location for over ten years. During this time, it got both a good reputation in the industry and many happy customers. ToneStudio had become the oldest specialty audio store in Indianapolis.
ToneStudio participated in the 1995 and 1996 "Stereophile Shows." In the "Show '95" in Los Angeles, two rooms were used, one under the ToneStudio name and the other in association with Symphonic Line. Both received the customers' top votes in the prestigious “Best Sound” category. Most importantly, they had two of the only five rooms receiving no negative votes.
In August 2000, Mark purchased downtown property in the Chatom Arch historic district of Indianapolis and began the process of getting authorization and building a new store: one which would have a two and a half story space with five listening rooms and one dedicated home theater.
Following few delays and obstacles construction is finished and ToneStudio finally moved in December of 2005, exactly 18 years after opening doors at their original location (December 15, 1987). We, at ToneStudio, hope that you will come to share with us our “Love of music."
